4 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Chiang Mai Weather
- When to Go to Chiang Mai ?
- For a first visit to Thailand, November is the best time to come, especially if you can be there for the Loy Krathong Festival. - If you can’t stand the heat, November to February will suit you fine. - If you want to witness the crazyiest party in the country, be there for the Songkran Festival in April. - If you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy a nice weather, February is for you. - If you want to make beautiful pictures of the nature (jungle, waterfall, sunsets...) October-November is a perfect time.
- Is the Rainy Season Really Bad ?
No, at the worst period (September) you can still enjoy 50% of good weather in the month. Of course if you come for a short period of time and are unlucky you could find yourself trapped in bad weather, but it is very rare that it will last more than 4 days in a row.
- Do I need an Air Con Room ?
From mid March to the end of September you will sleep better in an air conditioned room. From April to August I highly recommend it. If you come from a warm country you could find it easier to adjust and a fan might be enough. During the cool season (especially December and January) you’ll need a blanket rather than air con.
- What’s the Best Season for Trekking ?
Mid October to mid December is certainly the best period for a trekking. The nature is green, the weather is dry and the temperatures are enjoyable. Later in the cool season it will start to be very cold in the mountain, but with the right equipment it is still a good time. From March to June the temperatures are just too hot, if you like a gentle trip it’s not for you, if you look for a physical challenge, you’ll find it. The nature is burnt, it’s not so pleasant for the eyes and doesn’t make nice pictures. During the rainy season, on dry days you can enjoy the experience, bring the right shoes because the tracks will be very slippery. The jungle under the rain has some charm, the smells are incredible, but the nights in the humidity are a pain and you’ll meet plenty of insects. A trek during these months is very difficult to plan due to the rapidly changing conditions. Some travel agents won’t pay you back if you cancel because of extreme weather conditions. It is better to decide on the spot.
